SHOWPITCH ARTIST HOUR FEATURING ANJOLIQUE
Showpitch Talent Anjolique visited the Showpitch headquarters recently to sit down with us and talk about her journey as an artist and what’s to come. Below is an excerpt from the interview:

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS AS AN ARTIST?
It wouldn’t let me go. I tried to do everything else. I almost even joined the peace corps, in my grandmother’s words, “To avoid even getting a real job.” No matter what, no matter where I went, no matter what I tried to do, it wouldn’t let me go. And so I said, ‘Okay, you know what I have to try at it because if I don’t I’ll be old and hate myself, and I can’t live like that.’

WHO OR WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU?

I’m inspired by everything. You know, something random like a couple that walks by or you can get a melody from the birds in the morning. Or you could just be really upset and say something and then you’re like, ‘wait a minute, that was good. I should write that down.’ So, I’m inspired by a lot and it’s a beautiful thing to be able to understand that everything has a melody, everything has a meaning, and maybe just because you can’t understand it today doesn’t mean you won’t understand it tomorrow.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC STYLE?

My music takes on a couple of different forms. I’m more pop-rock with R&B esque. Definitely high energy, and fun.

WHERE DO YOU GET ALL OF YOUR ENERGY FROM?
As soon as you came in we could tell you were very upbeat and lively, not shy at all! I’m a LEO--heyy!--but I don’t think there is ever a reason to really not be happy, that’s the truth. So, no matter what happens in life or how far to the left things go, as long as you’ve got joy on the inside nothing can keep you down. I learned that, I live by that and I think it comes out to other people because everyone needs to be encouraged sometimes.

WHERE ARE YOU AT IN YOUR JOURNEY AS AN ARTIST RIGHT NOW?
I think all artists understand that, we’re ever evolving. So, in my career, I’m always learning and I will always have the starter artist mindset but I’m more comfortable in me as an artists then in my artistry, so I’m at an intermediate place. But with the help of Showpitch and other beautiful people and wonderful connections, we can take this over the top. 2015 I’m taking over the world, baby!

SO WHAT HAS BEEN THE HARDEST PART OF YOUR JOURNEY?

My journey? Being okay with me. Most people don’t understand that it’s okay to be you. No matter how different or similar you are, you were made and created to be you for a reason. And I love to be able to encourage people that it’s okay to be you. So that for me, was the hardest because sometimes in this industry they want sameness but they need differences. And so you can have a touch of sameness, you know pop music will always be pop music, but my voice is mine and no one can take that.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ARTISTS WHO ARE TRYING TO FIND THEMSELVES?

I’d say find what you really love. What comes out the easiest for you when you’re just by yourself? When you are in the shower and you’re singing? You can sing a cover song but it has to come from your soul, where does that come from? Once you figure that out, it doesn’t have to be an overnight thing, then start working on what you love.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOURNEY?
I love, love, love performing. Every time I’m on a stage, I don’t know where any of it comes from but just to be to look out and see people having a good time, dancing. Being on a stage is the best thing ever. I don’t know where it comes from. I think it just comes from a full acceptance of this is what I’m suppose to be doing.

YOU HAVE A SINGLE OUT RIGHT NOW, BUT WHAT’S NEXT?
There is a video for the single, Pick Your Poison. There is a full album coming. I’m going to be dropping another single: Like Me. And we’re just going to be keeping this thing going, from one festival to another. Definitely going to keep making music for everyone to enjoy.

IF YOU COULD COLLABORATE WITH ANYONE, WHO WOULD IT BE?

Oh, goodness…you know who I would really like to collab with? I think it would be a beautiful sound with Pharrell Williams and me. That guy is magical. I don’t know where any of his ideas come from but they are definitely sent from the gods somewhere. He has this beautiful capability of pulling sound and passion and positivity out of anybody. No one can get Happy out of their heads, so you know he’s pretty good. I would love to see what we could come up with. Collaborating with him would be awesome.
